Reported Speech (Discurso indireto)

É o discurso reportado, dizendo algo que alguém disse ou fez.

To say = quando utilizado, não é preciso um ouvinte. 

    Mary said that she was tired (Maria disse que ela estava cansada)
    John said to his brother that he was very happy (Pode-se colocar, só não é obrigatório)

To tell = o ouvinte, neste caso, é obrigatório. 

    Mary told me she was nice (Dizer "Mary said me" é errado / Com "to tell" não é utilizado preposição em seguida)

Quando a frase está no SIMPLE PRESENT, então utiliza-se o SIMPLE PAST no reported speech:
 
    Mary said: "I am a make up artist" --> Mary said that she was a make up artist.

Se Mary ainda fosse uma maquiadora, não seria necessário o uso do reported speech.

Quando a frase está no SIMPLE PAST, utiliza-se o PAST PERFECT no reported speech:
    "I traveled to Acapulco last summer" Paul told me --> Paul told me that he had traveled to Acapulco the summer before.

* Note como faz sentido o uso do PAST PERFECT, afinal, é de fato passado do passado.
* Note também como a expressão "last summer" foi passada pra "the summer before"; que é o verão antes (before) da conversa.

Quando o discurso está no PRESENT CONTINUOUS, o reported speech fica no PAST CONTINUOUS:
 
    "I a watching TV now" Jane said --> Janed said that she was watching TV then.

* Note como NOW foi passada para THEN, que significa "então"/"naquele momento".

Quando a frase está no PRESENT PERFECT, o reported speech fica no PAST PERFECT:
 
    "I have already seen this movie" John said --> John said he had already seen that movie

Quando a frase estiver no discurso direto utilizando o future (will), o reported speech fica com would:

    "I will study English next year" Mark told his brother --> Mark told his brother he would study English the following year.

* Se ainda fosse o ano que vem, então não ficaria "the following year"; varia de contexto pra contexto.

Frases no imperativo ficam no infinitivo nos reported speechs:

    "Come here" Mom said --> Mom said to go here.
    "Don't speak Portuguese in class" The teacher told us --> The teacher told us not to speak Portuguese in class
